Embracing Sanctuary: Faraz’s Journey and Insights from the Universities of Sanctuary Conference

Faraz is a Grantee at Hope for the Young, receiving funding for the first time this year, to support his academic journey and help him achieve his educational aspirations.

My name is Faraz, and I’m currently studying Acoustical and Audio Engineering at the University of Salford through a Sanctuary Scholarship. This scholarship allows young asylum seekers like me to access higher education, and I feel incredibly honoured to have been selected. Since starting my course in September, I’ve also taken on the role of student representative for my peers, which has been both a challenge and a privilege.

In December, I proudly represented the University of Salford at the Universities of Sanctuary Conference, at the University of York. The event brought together scholars, academics, and advocates from across the UK to discuss how higher education can better support refugees and asylum seekers. Today, only 7% of refugees have access to higher education compared to 42% of people globally, so seminars like this are so important to collectively work towards creating inclusive and welcoming university communities and welcoming environments for young refugees.

The conference featured a variety of workshops on topics, including the legal barriers facing sanctuary students, practical strategies for improving access to education, and ways to foster inclusive environments. Among the highlights were panel discussions on embedding cultures of sanctuary within universities and a session led by Dr. Ahmed Khaleel on The Book of Refugees, a powerful compilation of refugee experiences in the UK expressed through poetry, prose, art, and film.

One of the sessions I found particularly impactful focused on creating stronger networks of support for scholars. The insights I gained will stay with me as I continue my studies and engage with my community.  Meeting other scholars from universities across the country was another highlight – hearing their stories and sharing our experiences reminded me of the strength and resilience of our community.

“It was inspiring to connect with so many individuals who, despite their challenges, are committed to pursuing their dreams and making a difference.”

While I deeply appreciated the inspiring speakers and insightful discussions throughout the conference, perhaps the most meaningful part of the conference for me was meeting the Hope for the Young team in person. Matt, the CEO, and Pamela, the Grants and Advocacy Manager, also attended the event and, after months of support, seeing them face-to-face felt like meeting my guardian angels. Their encouragement and dedication have been a cornerstone of my journey, and I felt deeply grateful to thank them in person.

This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the invaluable support of Hope for the Young. Their support has been life-changing, from helping me find accommodation to guiding me through the challenges of university life. I can honestly say I wouldn’t be where I am today without their help.

“Attending the conference was a truly transformative experience, leaving me with a renewed sense of purpose and hope. It reinforced the importance of organizations like Hope for the Young, and the role of universities in creating opportunities for asylum seekers and refugees.”

Thank you, Hope for the Young, for your incredible support and for making this journey possible. If you’d like to support more young people like me, to access education and transformative opportunities, consider donating to Hope for the Young today.
