Our Statement on the far-right riots
Over the past week, the news has been filled with reports of violent far-right protests, inciting hatred, and racist ideologies across the UK. At Hope for the Young, we were particularly upset and concerned about the targeting of asylum seeker accommodation and asylum support centres across the country.
It’s been incredibly difficult for our team to receive messages from young people scared to leave their accommodation, and from others who have witnessed racist abuse. We have been supporting as best we can by checking in with them and sharing information and guidance with our staff, mentors and mentees to ensure their safety during this period.
Hope for the Young stands in solidarity with every person impacted by these appalling events and stands united with the 240 signatories of this statement convened by Together With Refugees, condemning the violent anti-migrant attacks and calling for a more compassionate and united way forward away from divisive politics, racist rhetoric and demonising language.
Despite the unrest, the response and counter-demonstrations we’ve witnessed show us that hope and compassion will always stand strong against division and hate. From members of the public rebuilding and protecting mosques, to providing refreshments and words of kindness to all, we are inspired and strengthened in the knowledge that these riots do not represent the British public.
If you would like to take further action and support those affected in your communities there are a number of things you can do:
1. Check in with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours and make sure all those around you have the support they need.
2. Support and follow other organisations that are actively working to overcome hate and promoting inclusive communities such as HOPE not Hate and Stand Up to Racism – SUTR.
3. Attend an organised counter-protest or sign your name on a petition, like Refugee Action’s, calling for an end to racist rhetoric and riots.
4. Sign up to become a mentor for a young refugee and show those seeking safety in the UK that they are welcome and valued in our society.
