Sithmi’s Journey: Turning Support into a Superpower
Sithmi is one of the young people on our Mentoring Programme, who has also been the Communications and Marketing Volunteer at Hope for the Young for 6 months. She has brought her creativity and enthusiasm to this role, and we feel very lucky to have her.

Almost two years ago, I discovered Hope for the Young while searching for extra support with my studies. As a self-driven learner, finding this organization felt like discovering the missing piece I needed. What started as academic support has grown into one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. A big part of this journey began with Lois, my mentoring coordinator, who guided me from the very beginning.
Through her support, I connected with mentors who helped me academically and personally. I’ve had two amazing mentors, and I especially want to appreciate my current mentor, Izzie. She has always been encouraging, patient, and understanding. Both mentors have shaped my path, and I am deeply grateful for their guidance.
During these two years, I participated in two mentoring programmes that boosted my confidence and vision for the future. Inspired by their impact, I decided I wanted to get involved with Hope for the Young by volunteering. My first role was as an Interviewing Assistant, where I learned the importance of communication, listening, and supporting others. I helped interview new Mentors, before they became part of Hope for the Young’s community.

This year, I joined the Marketing and Communications team, where I now work under the guidance of my manager, Hannah as the Communications Marketing Volunteer. Every day, I learn and create through tasks like video editing, social media management, content creation, merchandising, and certificate design. Hannah has been incredibly supportive, understanding my goals and encouraging my growth. This role allows me to combine my passion with purpose doing creative work I enjoy while contributing to something bigger than myself.
I’ve also taken part in special opportunities within the organization. I was proud to be part of the Party Planning Committee, as one of the leaders of our annual party, where I worked with others to plan and bring the celebration to life. Additionally, I am also an ambassador for Hope for the Young, representing the community and helping to inspire and welcome new members.

Looking back, this journey has taught me not only about marketing and communications but also about teamwork, resilience, and the power of giving back. None of this would have been possible without the incredible team at Hope for the Young from Lois and my mentors to Hannah and every person I’ve worked with. Your support, encouragement, and kindness have made a lasting difference in my life.
I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next, but for now, I’m grateful to be right here learning, creating, leading, and contributing every step of the way.
During Refugee Week Sithmi and Izzie decided to record a conversation they had, in the form of a podcast episode, sharing their reflections on their own strengths and what they are proud of. You can listen here.
